The Data Walker is a proof-of-concept device demonstrating that a clinically relevant tool for measuring gait distance and walking speed can be developed using readily available hardware combined with innovative yet straightforward programming.

The concept originated in 1998 when the developer envisioned adapting a Hall-effect bicycle odometer for clinical gait assessment. After successfully recalibrating an unused Schwinn digital speedometer for clinical use, the device was employed for many years in a Long Island nursing home to objectively measure walking distance and gait speed, supporting patient mobility assessment and rehabilitation outcomes.

Today, technological advancements and software improvements have enabled us to refine and expand upon the original concept while preserving its simplicity. The Data Walker serves as a demonstration that powerful mobility assessment tools can be created from affordable, readily available components. By combining accessible hardware with straightforward programming, individuals, clinicians, students, researchers, and makers can build their own customized systems and contribute to the development of practical healthcare technology.
