Troubleshooting
Solutions to common issues with the Data Walker device.
Flashing Issues
Device not appearing in port picker
- Ensure you are using a data-capable USB-C cable, not a power-only cable
- Try a different USB port (avoid USB hubs)
- On Windows, install the CP210x driver
- Close any other programs that might be using the serial port
- Restart your browser
Flash starts but fails
- Hold the BOOT button while connecting
- Try a shorter USB cable
- Ensure the power source is stable (not a low-power USB port)
- Refresh the page and try again
“Not allowed” error
- Web Serial requires HTTPS — ensure you are on https://
- Check that your browser supports Web Serial (Chrome, Edge, Opera)
Self-Test Failures
“Only X magnets detected”
- Check that all 3 magnets are securely attached to the wheel
- Verify the sensor is within 5mm of the magnet path
- Rotate the wheel slowly and steadily during the test
- A magnet may have shifted or fallen off
“Uneven magnet spacing”
- Magnets should be positioned 120° apart (evenly spaced)
- Measure and reposition magnets if needed
- Use a template or protractor for accurate placement
“No signal detected”
- Check the RJ22 cable connection at both ends
- Inspect the cable for damage
- Test continuity with a multimeter
- The sensor may need replacement
Measurement Issues
Distance reads too high or too low
- Run calibration against a known measured course
- Verify wheel circumference matches device configuration
- Check for wheel slippage on smooth floors
- Ensure consistent walking path during tests
Inconsistent readings between tests
- Run self-test to verify magnet detection
- Check for loose magnets
- Verify sensor mounting is secure
- Use consistent conditions (same floor, footwear)
No distance recorded during test
- Verify the test was started (press button to begin recording)
- Check sensor cable connection
- Run self-test to verify sensor is working
Display Issues
Display is blank
- Check battery level — charge if needed
- Press any button to wake from sleep mode
- Verify I2C cable connection to display
- Display may need replacement if damaged
Display is dim
- Adjust brightness in Settings → Display
- Low battery may reduce brightness — charge device
Connection Issues
Device not responding to buttons
- Charge the device
- Press RESET button if available
- Reflash the firmware
- Check for physical button damage
