Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Data Walker clinical mobility assessment device.

General

What is the Data Walker?

The Data Walker is a clinical-grade distance measurement device that attaches to rolling walkers. It measures distance traveled during standardized mobility tests like the 6-Minute Walk Test and 10-Meter Walk Test using Hall effect sensors and wheel-mounted magnets.

Is the Data Walker a medical device?

The Data Walker is a clinical wellness device for mobility assessment. It is not a diagnostic medical instrument and should not be used as the sole basis for clinical decisions. Always use professional judgment when interpreting results.

What walkers is it compatible with?

The Data Walker is designed to work with most standard rolling walkers (rollators) with wheels in the 6-8 inch diameter range. The mounting clips accommodate standard walker frame tubing.

Accuracy

How accurate is the Data Walker?

With proper calibration, the Data Walker achieves accuracy within ±0.5% over measured distances. Without calibration, accuracy is typically within ±2% based on nominal wheel circumference.

How often should I calibrate?

We recommend calibration verification monthly for quality assurance, and full recalibration when moving the device to a different walker or after replacing wheels or magnets. See the calibration guide.

Why are 3 magnets used instead of 1?

Three evenly-spaced magnets provide better resolution and enable the self-test to verify even spacing. This catches issues like loose magnets before they affect clinical measurements.

Technical

What browsers support the web flasher?

The web flasher uses the Web Serial API, which is supported in Chrome, Edge, and Opera on desktop. Safari and Firefox do not support Web Serial.

Can I flash firmware on mobile?

Chrome on Android has limited Web Serial support, but results may vary. For reliable flashing, we recommend using a desktop computer.

How do I update to a new firmware version?

Visit the Releases page, connect your device, and flash the latest version. Your calibration data is preserved across firmware updates.

Can I downgrade to an older firmware?

Yes. Visit the Releases page and select the older version you wish to install. Note that very old versions may not support all features.

Maintenance

How do I clean the device?

Wipe the enclosure with a soft, damp cloth or 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes. Avoid getting moisture in the USB port. See the maintenance guide for detailed instructions.

How long does the battery last?

A full charge provides 8-12 hours of active use, depending on display brightness and usage patterns. The device can be charged via USB-C while in use.

Is the battery replaceable?

The internal battery is not user-replaceable. If battery performance degrades significantly after several years of use, contact us for service options.
