Time Required
This guide takes approximately 5 minutes if you have all components ready.
Prerequisites
- Assembled Data Walker device with Hall sensor
- USB-C data cable (not power-only)
- Computer with Chrome, Edge, or Opera browser
- Rolling walker for mounting
Step 1: Flash the Firmware
- Connect the Data Walker to your computer using the USB-C cable
- Go to the Releases page
- Click “Install Data Walker Firmware”
- Select the serial port when prompted
- Wait for the flash to complete (30-60 seconds)
Step 2: Run the Self-Test
After flashing, the device boots into the self-test screen automatically.
- When prompted, slowly rotate the wheel one full turn
- The firmware verifies all 3 magnets are detected
- Wait for “Self-test passed” confirmation
Success
Once the self-test passes, your Data Walker is ready for clinical use. The calibration factor defaults to 1.0000.
Step 3: Mount on Walker
- Secure the main unit to the walker frame using the provided clips
- Attach the Hall sensor near the wheel with magnets
- Ensure the RJ22 cable is securely connected at both ends
- Verify the sensor is within 5mm of the magnet path
Step 4: Calibration (Optional)
For highest accuracy, calibrate against a known distance:
- Mark out a 14-meter course (for 10-meter walk test)
- Navigate to Tests → 10-meter walk
- Complete 3 test runs
- Accept the auto-suggested calibration factor
